Pro Tools | Sonic Drop: Eventide H9000 Drums

Hollywood loves a sequel, and it’s my pleasure to present to you Eventide H9000 Drums as this month’s Sonic Drop. You may recall last year we released the Eventide H90 Drums built with Eventide’s H90 FX processor, and since those samples sounded as good as they did, it only seemed reasonable to do it bigger and better for the blockbuster season… Enter the Eventide H9000.

The Eventide H9000 Drums comes packed with 60 drum loops and 120 individual one shots, all processed in ways that only the H9000 can. Minus the H90 Drums from last year, nothing sounds like these and the Eventide H9000 are far beyond a sequel standing uniquely on their own.

The H9000 is Eventide’s flagship FX processor, and essentially the most powerful FX processor money can buy. It comes loaded with 1600 algorithms and covers Eventide’s entire FX legacy with algorithms dating back to the legendary H3000 and nearly everything since. As far as FX processors go, it doesn’t get any better than this. I’ve had an Eventide DSP4000 from the mid 90s, and it was hugely integral to my sound as an artist for years and years. Having access to its sound plus so much more in a modern format makes the H9000 completely irreplaceable for me.

Aside from the insane number of algorithms available in the H9000, it also includes a standalone or plugin editor for the unit which is how I use mine. The Emote plugin allows complete control over the H9000 for designing FX chains (you can see a few of mine in the screenshot below), as well as total integration with Pro Tools where I have 16 channels of the H9000 permanently living in my IO setup via ADAT.

For those who are extra geeky, VSig is a piece of software offered by Eventide that allows you to build your own algorithms from scratch as well as download existing algorithms off the H9000 and modify if you so desire. I naturally did this right away with one of my personal favorite algorithms and quickly learned I’m much better at using the algorithms than writing them!

In creating the Eventide H9000 Drums I wanted to expand on what I originally did with the H90 Drums and truly take advantage of the unique power of the H9000. While the H90 is an incredible piece of gear, it contains a fraction of what is in the H9000. One could even say it has the greatest hits. However, the H9000 goes deep in a way the H90 is not designed for, and consequently the FX chains I put together for this release were significantly more complex. For one, there is a lot of pitch shifting in the Eventide H9000 Drums as well as unique reverbs and modulation constantly creating sounds that are hyperreal, expansive and often cinematic. There’s an incredible width that also happens with you process literally anything with an H9000 and I took full advantage of this to create loops and hits that pop out in your ears. The source sounds came from some of my Elektron drum machines as well as field recordings and other sounds I’ve amassed in the last year, however the H9000 took them far beyond their original sound.
